In the last few weeks, I’ve gotten a number of new subscribers. Welcome!
If you’re new here, I recently wrote a post about what it’s like giving money to people that need it, both the risk and joy of giving people money.
In short, it’s only enjoyable, and enjoyable in a particular way, precisely because it’s risky. It feels like so many social services have the outcome baked in.
People either will or won’t get a job. They will or won’t work towards their goals.
But I find giving people money thrilling in a unique way precisely because in doing so we hand over our control over the outcome. Who knows what they may want?
Held, the non-profit I started that gives money to people that need it, has now given over $240,000 directly to people. We’re giving money to people in Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Durham, and my home city Greensboro.
But all of this started with one person, the first person that we began providing $833 per month to. His name is Brian and this is his story.
You can read more about Brian’s story on our site.
